Who is Human Bean, anyway?

In 1980 I bought Human Bean at a 'jumble sale' in England. Something about the creature drew me—it seems to express an indomitable, curious, affectionate attitude. Because he's long and green, I named him Human Bean, and he came to be connected to my own true nature. I think of Human Bean as the expression of the Buddha nature that is in every one of us, the green growing willing hopeful part of us.

In the 1990s I went through a wretched period that lasted several years, and Human Bean was my comforter and guide. I suppose you could say Human Bean is my inner child, but it's more like I am Human Bean's inner child. As I photographed Human Bean on the various adventures we went through together, Human Bean helped me come back to myself, helped me settle the self on the self, helped me take refuge in my own true nature.

So the Human Bean in me greets the Human Bean in you. We all have a Human Bean. Liberate the bean!

The entire universe is the true human body.
The entire universe is the gate of liberation.

Bean in an autumn garden.

We went into the attic,
Human Bean and I,
We found some sea fan wings,
And he showed me how to fly.
